Submarine case study.

Media notes.
Seagull sounds at the start - suggests he’s by the ocean.
Establishing shots of the opening shots to set the scene.
Shot of Oliver facing the sea on his own creates the idea of him being alone.
Shrine of Oliver Tate who passed away, very colourful to suggest the character of Oliver.
Oliver is in full black clothes and so are all the other students. Although Jordanna is in a red coat highlighting her to others. Red symbolises love and Jordanna is who he loves.
Scene opens up bright in the woods as all the teenagers have fun playing together.
Upon doing something bad to Zoey he uses the word flagitious which means:
Scene with Oliver lying on the floor in his room, shows loneliness. The room is like by a light in the back of the room.
Writes to Zoey and therefore shows that he cares about her even though it’s technically his fault she isn’t at school.
Later Jordanna is no longer wearing the red coat and therefore shows the change in his interest towards her/her attitude towards her instead.
Next she has the red coat on again probably because she kissed him and took photos of it.
Jump but of Oliver on the floor bleeding with a camera looking down on him and Jordanna making them both seem inferior and weak.
Oliver’ mum is depressed that she was unable to get a career in acting.
Uses montages about parents with an old camera to make it feel more authentic.
There is repetition of the idea of evolution, Oliver looks in the dictionary about evolution. Then soon after we see a theme park with the title of 'evolution' soon after.

Advertising.

Anna was in charge of advertising and promotional material, meaning that she would be making/designing the posters for our program.

Originally, her idea was make her poster by hand with Terry & Twitchy written in paper that she glued together to make the letters and to have the rabbit's ears and panda's to stick out over the paper, however this failed as it did not present itself as a proper poster. Also the rest of the group being confused on what it is supposed to be led her to start again.

This was her final idea for the poster/marketing for Terry and Twitchy. Her idea for the poster was for it not be too colourful as the animation does not have much colour to show except the opening sequence with confetti, so having colour wasn't necessary. But I decided that it we needed to add a bit of colour to it so it wouldn't look too bland and boring, so I added some colour to the text. Anna's idea was that the two characters to be seen from the public eye through outside of the window with a line paper background. The audience will able to established that the two character does not actually live in a normal world but a real life animation drawn on a piece of lined paper.

Looking back, we could have added even more colour as it is a children's TV show, which are usually full of strong colours to help hold a child's attention. We could have done this by making the window frame a bright red as that usually grabs attention because of its connotations.

Report.

Summary of Treatment.
Our program will be ten twenty minute episodes and it will follow the story of our panda, Terry, at first being alone but finding a small rabbit curled up under a tree, also alone. He decides to try wake her up and attempts to befriend her.
The whole series will follow Terry and his attempts to become friends with Twitchy, our perpetually tired rabbit who always seems fed up with Terry's antics, and their adventures as a result of his failed attempts. Despite her cool exterior they grow to be close over the series, much like siblings. It will explore the values of friendship.
Each episode will have a basic individual storyline, but throughout the series there will be a subtle over arching story that will come to a close in the last episode.
We would air it on Cartoon Network as they have shows that appeal to a range of age groups and it is generally a popular channel.

Details of initial research and audience research conducted.
Throughout the task we did a fair amount of research, Ben went onto YouGov and looked at all the reviews and demographics. This allowed me to get a look at the genders at which watched the shows and what people initially thought about the show. Ben decided to ignore the ages though because the ages were rather large (We assume parents did that bit for their children or children lied about their age) As a result Ben was unable to have an idea of the main ages, although he knew that most of these shows' age demographics we rather low since we used to watch most of them when we were younger.

We came up with the idea of animal based characters based of how many kids TV shows actually feature animals, it seems that children enjoy animals as it can break the idea of reality and make the kids have a free imagination. Therefore this gave us a basic idea on what to work on.

Summary of your print based advertising.
We decided that the print based advertising will be placed around Primary Schools and parks since the younger children demographic are usually found around there. We believe parks would be best since they are rarely used for posters and advertisements and therefore there would be a larger space for these advertisements. We also believe that most parents get pets that they must walk and therefore they will walk the pet in the park, this would therefore mean they will most likely see the print based advertisement since it is in an open place at which they could have a rest from walking and read the advertisement for the future. If we do place it in the park another thing will be to place it around most of the entrances or around dog poo bins. This would be because everyone will pass the entrance and therefore it will be able to catch their eye. Near the bins will be good too because if a parent is cleaning up animal dung and throwing it in the bin, then they will notice the poster and therefore read it.

Summary of your online marketing.
We have decided to do some Facebook pop-up ads as they will be able to catch the attention of users. No one usually pays attention to sidebar ads and video ads are usually skipped without any consideration being taken. Pop-up ads are the type of ad that forces itself upon the user, they must close the ad themselves to get onto the page they wish to access. This means that they will most likely read a small part of the ad and if it catches their attention they won’t close it. Therefore we will have a higher chance of our website being visited and us being able to gain in viewers in such a short time.

Reflection on strengths and weaknesses of marketing. What we’d do differently.
Facebook marketing seems to be very hard especially since the users is slowly decreasing. Although a good reason to advertise on Facebook is that now generally older people use it (I.e. parents.) This would mean that the parents of the young children will find the TV show and introduce it to them. If were going to do it again we may consider a YouTube ad too since it would not be too hard and the shorter ads are unable to be skipped so that people are forced to view it. We will most likely advertise on a Minecraft YouTube channel since the younger audiences watch them channels.

Overall evaluation.
Overall we worked well on this project together, however there were some cases of miscommunication. This, in turn, led to some confusion within the group as to who was meant to be doing each job and at which time we were meant to got stuff done by.
This led to some of us struggling with deadlines, so to improve on our work we could have utilised our group chat more. This would have allowed us to discuss our ideas better as well, thus improving the overall work ethic of our group.

Overall we also believe the project went well, this included the making of the video, the music and the in-depth information that we used. Frances spent approximately eight hours in and out of school on drawing the animation. Ben also spent some time near the end making and adding the music and then soon after uploading the video to YouTube which took around an hour to upload alone. Most of our time was used fairly except for near the end at which small parts were noticeable rushed.

Strength and Weaknesses.

The group has many strengths Frances is able to draw, Callum is musical and Anna decided to take lead near the start. This meant that since Ben had software and files near the end he had to only help out with the file binding and transfers. Although as we went on we didn’t get any music, so on Sunday the 1st of October Ben decided to make his own music and add that to the video. The music wasn’t very complex since it’s only a kids show.  He made the music and added it to the video that Frances had made. Then the next day he uploaded them to YouTube and uploaded added it to his blog so that everyone else can see and add it to their blogs.

Our characters

For our program, we decided upon having two main characters, both humanoid animals, as to make it easier to understand and to follow the pattern of many popular children's shows. We chose to use a panda and a rabbit which are both quite favourable among younger children as favourite animals and they are both able to have distinctly different personalities.

Our panda went through a couple of name changes, but all starting with a "T" so it was able to alliterate with our rabbit's name which we came up with first. We started with the name Tae which is a traditional Korean name, but after finding out it had an unsavoury meaning in another language we decided against using it. After a couple of odd suggestions, we fell on the name Terry which seemed to fit him well. We also had the idea to make our panda the more active and bright of the pair as to try and help with a subliminal message of not judging a person's character based on stereotypes.

Our rabbit's names choosing process was much simpler, however. Her name, Twitchy, stems from the idea that as a  rabbits nose twitches often and among the most popular names for pet rabbits are those that describe a rabbit, for example, Smudge if the rabbit has darker spots, Flopsey if the rabbit has floppy ears or Snowball if the rabbit is white. We also chose to make her the more tired of the pair which goes against the idea that most cartoons involving rabbits usually follow: that the rabbit is the happiest and most energetic. We did this to follow the same subliminal message as for Terry's personality.
